Crewe Powerhouse
Sustainable transformation of 1960s market shed to live music hub
Client: Cheshire East Council
Location: Crewe, Cheshire
Status: Submitted for planning 2022. Currently on hold
Crewe Powerhouse involved the transformation of a disused 1960s market shed into a 500-capacity live music venue with rehearsal studios, café/bar facilities, and accessible back-of-house spaces. The aim was to create a vibrant cultural hub for Crewe, supporting creative skills development and revitalising the town’s night-time economy. BFF worked closely with SD Structures to ensure the design could retain and reuse the existing market shed’s steel portal frame, reflecting the town’s industrial and railway heritage while introducing a contemporary form that opens onto Lyceum Square. Incorporating sustainable technologies and flexible internal spaces, the project establishes a bold new identity for Crewe’s emerging cultural quarter.
