The refurbishment of the Grade II* listed, Aldenham House at Haberdashers' Schools in Elstree. The current project focuses on repairing and upgrading the existing fabric of Aldenham House to preserve and extend its life, along with the provision of a suite of flats for student teachers.
-
Aldenham House is a Grade II*-listed building dating back at least 350 years. Over the years, it has served as a major country house, a wartime BBC radio centre, a hotel, and a film set. The house sits within a historic Victorian landscape, itself listed at Grade II on the Historic England Register of Parks and Gardens.
After considering a number of possibilities for more significant reorganisation, the current project includes essential repairs to roofs, brickwork, stonework, leadwork, and windows, alongside the addition of insulation and modifications to parts of the roofscape to support long-term maintenance. Additionally, the full refurbishment of the upper floor of the Stable Block will reinstate staff flats for junior teachers.
The building’s exterior has suffered from ongoing water ingress and fabric deterioration, leading to a gradual decline in its condition. This restoration project provides an opportunity to return all areas of the building to active use and to ensure it remains a fitting and enduring setting for the life of the School for generations to come.
The specialist contractors are drawing on their extensive experience to carefully restore the building fabric using time-honoured techniques. The roofing, brickwork, stonework, and leadwork will all be meticulously refurbished, carried out under an impressive structure of extensive scaffolding and temporary roof.
