Architectural Design Workshop held for Prestwick Academy

Broadway Prestwick has co-hosted an Architectural Design Workshop for Prestwick Academy's design and technology department with Burrell Foley Fischer.

Faye Davies, BFF’s Managing Director and a Specialist Conservation Architect, led the event. Together with her team at BFF, she will lead the Broadway's restoration in the years to come, and this workshop was a wonderful introduction for the pupils of Prestwick Academy to architecture and the potential for the Broadway's future.

Originally opened to the public on April 29, 1935, with a capacity of 1,060, the cinema was an instant success. In common with many cinemas however, it witnessed a decline in attendance during the 1960s and its final screening took place in 1976. Since then the building has had other uses but was eventually left vacant and derelict, until it was purchased by The Friends of Broadway Prestwick in 2024.

BFF is currently working on plans to refurbish the Category ‘C’ Listed building, to create a multifunctional hub for events, pop-up films, and community gatherings while maintaining the venue’s unique heritage. The initial phase will focus on creating a smaller community event space, serving as a stepping stone towards the comprehensive restoration of the entire structure.

Three sessions were held across a full day, with all National 5 and Higher D&T pupils taking part to construct both exterior and interior models of what the Broadway could look like in the future. The results were incredibly inspiring and we are grateful for the passion and enthusiasm of all participants, with the winners receiving certificates from Faye and the Broadway team.
