OCEAN

CLIENT: OCEAN CHARITY

Ocean, a live music venue in Hackney, London, was fashioned from two buildings that sit opposite the Town Hall, the public library built in 1906 and a 1920 Methodist hall. The external façade, complete with pilasters and heavy stone window reveals along with eaves was not modified.

Ocean 1, the largest auditorium, was created in the grand barrel-vaulted hall with smaller auditoria Ocean 2, in the old library building above the Rising Tide music training and resource centre, and Ocean 3.

The whole lot is connected by a dynamic arrangement of foyers and bars in vibrant reds, greens, blues and purples contrasting with the more industrial raw concrete walls up the stairs, the zinc topped bars and the galvanised steel fittings.

Artworks by Michael Brennand-Woods, who was involved with the project from its inception, are interwoven with the fabric of the building.
