Union Chapel Sunday School

Heritage in Action – Restoring Buildings, Reviving Stories, Inspiring Change

Client: Union Chapel Projects
Listed: Grade I and II*
Status: Under construction
Location: Islington, London

Currently under construction, the project includes repair works, accessibility improvements and refurbishment of the Union Chapel Sunday School Hall and associated facilities. The Sunday School is the central of three grade II* listed buildings erected against the east end of the grade I Union Chapel. The complex was designed by James Cubit and opened in 1877. The project has been developed from an original masterplan carried out by Burrell Foley Fischer LLP Architects in June 2015 and aims to converse the heritage of the former church and improve its facilities to open the building to the diverse communities of London.

  • Union Chapel is an independent, secular charity founded in 1991 which manages the ongoing care and development of the building. It has also become an umbrella organisation that helps coordinate a whole host of activities and music events in the complex. The two main divisions are Union Chapel Directions – a trading subsidiary that runs an award-winning venue, Bar & Kiosk and The Margins Project – a charitable subsidiary that provides vital support to people facing homelessness and isolation.
