STRATFORD PICTUREHOUSE

CLIENT: LONDON BOROUGH OF NEWHAM

A new landmark development central to the urban regeneration strategy for Stratford East, providing within the context of a new public square and cultural quarter a four-screen cinema with exhibition, café bar and restaurant facilities.

The island site allocated to the cinema represented an ideal opportunity to establish a new urban setting for both the cinema and the Stratford East Theatre Royal.

The entrance to the new cinema is from the western end of the new square and a covered indent has been formed into the western edge of the building housing a restaurant terrace. The four auditoria are entered at first floor level, ensuring that all cinemagoers experience the building as a whole.

The project was an FPDC National Winner for Leisure, and voted as one of the best 50 buildings of 2000 by The Independent.

While the rest of Britain goes crazy for the bland multiplex, east London is now home to two picture houses which are also architectural masterpieces.
